Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
“The human energy field is a field of information and intelligence.”
/ H. Milne, 'My Journey to the Heart of Listening' /
The Breath of Life
Life expresses itself as motion. At a deep level of our physiological functioning all healthy, living tissues subtly "breathe" with the motion of life - a phenomenon that produces rhythmic impulses which can be palpated by sensitive hands. The presence of these subtle rhythms in the body was discovered by osteopath Dr William Sutherland over 100 years ago.
Contrary to popular belief Dr Sutherland realized that cranial sutures were, in fact, designed to express small degrees of motion. He undertook many years of research during which he demonstrated the existence of this motion and eventually concluded it is essentially produced by the body's inherent life force, which he referred to as the Breath of Life. Furthermore, Dr Sutherland discovered that the motion of cranial bones he first discovered is closely connected to subtle movements that involve a network of interrelated tissues and fluids at the core of the body; including cerebrospinal fluid, the central nervous system, the membranes that surround the central nervous system and the sacrum.
Essential ordering principle
In the biodynamic approach of craniosacral work the subtle rhythms produced by the Breath of Life are regarded as expressions of health that carry an essential ordering principle for both body and mind. Dr Sutherland realized the important role played by the fluids in the body (particularly cerebrospinal fluid) in helping to disseminate these ordering forces throughout the body.
The essential ordering principle carried in the rhythms of the Breath of Life acts as a blueprint for health which is present from the time of our early embryological development and is the fundamental factor that maintains balance in our form and function. Thus, the ability of cells and tissues to express their primary respiratory motion is a critical factor in determining our state of health - when these rhythms are expressed in fullness and balance, health and well-being naturally follow.

"Everyone should consider his body as a priceless gift from one whom he loves above all, a marvelous wok of art, of indescribable beauty, and mystery beyond human conception, and so delicate that a word, a breath, a look, nay, a thought may injure it."

Dynamic Stillness
The Breath of Life arises from profound Stillness. As practitioners deepen their relationship to client’s system over time, Stillness becomes a direct clinical perception and is found to lie at the heart of all clinical process. This appreciation of stillness is seen in all of the great spiritual traditions. As this process deepens, the meditator or contemplative discovers that stillness is a ubiquitous ground of emergence for all of life and is a gateway to its deepest mysteries. Stillness deepens beyond the conceptual mind and its conditioned state to the roots of our human condition. The Dynamic Stillness is an implicate realm of potential from which the Breath of Life arises. The power of the Breath of Life is rooted in this Stillness as it manifests Creative Intelligence throughout space and time. An awareness of Dynamic Stillness thus brings the practitioner to the center of things, the basic essence of life itself.
Although the Dynamic Stillness is implicit in all form, it is, in turn, an explicate expression of an even deeper mystery. In many Eastern spiritual traditions, such as Buddhism and Taoism, this mystery is called Emptiness, and is understood to be the unfathomable ground of life. Buddhism stresses that all forms are inherently empty and that emptiness is the essential truth of existence. This emptiness is not a vacuum, but is the essence of all form. Here we see that emptiness lies at the foundation of our conditioned reality and is not separate from everyday experience. In craniosacral biodynamics this truth is echoed in the belief that health is also “neither produced nor destroyed” and cannot be increased or decreased. Health is never lost and is ever present and available. It is a constant.

During the course of our lives our bodies become patterned, shaped and conditioned according to how we¹re able to deal with any stresses or traumas. If stresses or traumas are overwhelming, they become locked in the body as sites of inertia - until such a time as we are able to access resources that allow them to be processed and released. Common causes of inertia are physical injuries, emotional and psychological stresses, birth trauma and toxicity. Due to an accumulation of these stresses, tissues can become imprinted with the memory of unresolved experiences and so act like video tape which may keep replaying whenever stimulated.
The emphasis in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is to help resolve the trapped forces that underlie and govern patterns of disease and fragmentation in both body and mind. This involves the practitioner "listening through the hands" to the body's subtle rhythms and any patterns of inertia or congestion. The intention of treatment is to facilitate the expression of the Breath of Life and so enhance the body's own self-healing and self-regulating capabilities.
Holistic Approach
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Benefits:
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is useful as both a primary treatment method or as part of a treatment program combined with other traditional or complementary techniques. The vast majority of conditions are safe to be treated with craniosacral therapy. In general, Craniosacral therapy enhances the function of the Autonomic Nervous System, which consists of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.

The body heals and repairs itself when we are most relaxed or asleep. Relaxation has long been valued for its healing and restorative effects on the body and encouraging deep states of relaxation in the body is easily facilitated by Craniosacral therapy. The main centers of the nervous system lie in the cranial and sacral regions and the gentle manipulations of CST modulate the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, optimizing the function of both.
